Mamdani is turning a former juvenile jail in the Bronx into NYC’s first city-run grocery store


For 50 years, the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center was synonymous with abuse and neglect. Now, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani is turning it into the first city-run grocery store — a 20,000-square-foot location opening in 2027, and the first of five planned city-operated stores. The Bronx location serves a neighborhood where 36% of residents live in poverty and there is only one full-service supermarket within a quarter mile.
