The New York Renaissance Faire turns 49 this year, though it will feel much older than that once you get inside the gates.
Whether it’s your first time attending the Hudson Valley’s Elizabethan extravaganza or you can remember every costume you’ve worn going back 10 years, we’ve got you covered.
Here are five new features and returning favorites to look for if you’re planning to attend this year’s faire.
1. Stick to the theme
Sure, you can dress as whatever you want, whenever you want during the Renaissance’s run, on weekends from now through Oct. 4, but if you’re looking for your people, you’ll want to check out which weekends carry which themes. The special themes range from cottagecore on Aug. 22-23 to the closing revels of the Harvest Ball on Oct. 3-4.
2. Bring your coin purse
The New York Renaissance Faire features more than 125 local artisans who display and sell unique handcrafted wares ranging from armor and weaponry to scents and soaps—a perfect selection for Ormund Hightower. Check out what else they’ve got here or wait to patronize in person; just don’t forget your pence, shillings, and pounds.
3. Feast like a king
There are plenty of foods that, while not exclusive to the Renaissance Faire, certainly give off those vibes. We’re thinking turkey legs at Cook’s Cottage, Barbarian Beef at The Cob & Seoul House, or a banger sandwich at Sir Lancelot’s. And all your contemporary needs can be met too, with tons of vegan and gluten-free options on the wide-ranging menu.
4. Leave in awe
With 17 separate performance areas and intriguing acts filling the streets in between, it’s impossible to wander the Renaissance Faire without being wowed. This year’s performers include the internationally renowned Arsene Dupin Magikhana Show, featuring the perfect mix of illusions and comedy, and Shakespeare in the Shire, with unique shows taking place every weekend. Those are just two out of dozens for you to check out.
5. Drink like a pirate
Thirsty adults won’t want to miss the famed Pub Crawl, which takes place four times daily (you may only take part once). Leaving at 11 a.m. (no judgment), 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m., the Company of the Golden Boarstags will lead you on this tour of four lively taverns and public houses where the ales, meads, and ciders flow freely and everyone knows your name (or will surely learn it by the end of the crawl).
The New York Renaissance Faire takes place on weekends from now through Oct. 4 at 600 Rte. 17A in the beautiful Hudson Valley town of Tuxedo. Check here for tickets and here for directions.
